These jet rosary beads were found with a hoard of coins and jewellery at Canonbie in Dumfriesshire. The hoard was buried around 1300.

Personal prayer played an important part in the medieval church. Crucifixes, images of saints and rosaries of beads were used to focus the mind when praying. The beads were slipped through the fingers as a means of counting set prayers.
