Fragment of a carved oak panel
Add to album

This fragment of a carved oak panel dates from around 1595. It probably formed part of the interior decoration of a post-Reformation church.

The panel is inscribed on one side with the words 'Lord Help Us And Saif' (Save), a lyrical message providing Christian moral guidance. The date, 1595, and commemorative initials A.A. and I.S. are carved on the other side.

Probably the panel would have been made for a patron who was one of the wealthier members of the congregation and who would have installed it on his or her own initiative.
