Ticket, for lectures on Experimental Philosophy by James Ferguson

This written ticket admitted the holder to a course of twelve lectures on Experimental Philosophy given by James Ferguson (1770-1776) in Edinburgh. The ticket is dated 6 June 1768, and is in Ferguson's own handwriting.

The paper ticket is marked in red ink 'Edinburgh [illegible] 1768' and in black, within a double black circle 'Twelve/Lectures on/Experimental Philosophy/on /Mond. Tuesd./Wednesd. Thursd./and Fri. at 6 o'clock/by James Ferguson'.

Ferguson travelled all over Britain delivering popular lectures on scientific topics. In 1768 he paid his only visit to Scotland since leaving Edinburgh 25 years earlier, and gave a course in March which was so well attended that another was given in May, and a third was advertised for June, beginning on the 6th. While in Edinburgh, Ferguson met the clockmaker Thomas Reid and the physician Dr James Lind.
