Jacket, of Royal Midlothian Yeomanry Cavalry
Add to album

This officer's dress jacket is of the Royal Midlothian Yeomanry Cavalry, a part-time, rural mounted force. It dates from between around 1820 and 1838.

The jacket is trimmed with silver buttons.

The government encouraged the raising of Yeomanry units, seeing them as more reliable and flexible than the urban, independent Volunteers. The units, recruited from local landowners and their tenants, were used as a means of policing and control.
