This earthenware figure of a fishwife was made between 1820 and 1840, possibly at Thomas Rathbone's Pottery at Portobello in Midlothian.
The fishwife carries her fish basket by suspending it from a strap around her head.
'Toyes' such as this seem to have been made at several factories, although there is no known marked example. They are traditionally said to have been modelled on actual fishwives working in ports such as Leith and Newhaven.
