This one pound banknote was issued by the Clydesdale Bank Limited on 1 March 1884.
The Arms of Glasgow at the top of the note is surrounded by three female figures representing Commerce, Industry and the Arts. The signature of the accountant is printed and there is a manuscript signature on behalf of the general manager.
Established in Glasgow in 1838, the Clydesdale Bank had a rapid early expansion. Acquired in 1919 by the Midland Bank, it was to eventually take on the name of today's 'Clydesdale Bank Limited', currently owned by an Australian multi-national company.
