Aeroplane engine, destined for use in Lockheed Tristar

This Rolls-Royce RB-211-22 aero engine was made in 1970. It was the first of the -22 type of RB-211 to be specifically designed for the Lockheed Tristar three-engined airliner. However it was never fitted to a tristar and spent its working life from 1970 to 1985 as a test specimen for future development of the type.

The RB-211 is a bypass turbofan engine, the larger fan at the front of the engine providing a percentage of thrust which bypasses the compressed air entering the combustion chamber. The engine is marked is 'ROLLS-ROYCE LTD, DERBY ENGLAND, RB-211, SERIAL MARK 33 MARK RB211-22'. It is shown with the lower cover over the the combustion chamber removed.
