Cap for drill shaft
Add to album

This stone cap for a bow- or strap-drill shaft was found at Machermore Loch at Old Luce in Wigtownshire. It was used to drill holes in wood or bone. It could date from any time between 7500 BC and 1100 AD as the form of caps changed little over the years.

The stone is polished, with a smoothly ground central hollow on each face.
