Cross (fragment)

This fragment from a stone wheel-headed cross was found at Craiglemine at Glasserton in Wigtownshire. The shape and decoration have parallels to others in Wigtownshire, and reflect a style of sculpture centred at Whithorn.

The small fragment is from the top of the cross, which was shaped like a wheel. Four circular bosses would have formed the gaps between the arms of a cross, and another boss would have been in its centre.

Elaborate Christian sculptures served several purposes. Some may have been memorials, while others made statements about political or ecclesiastical power. They could mark boundaries, define areas of sanctuary, or be a focus for religious practice.
