This porcelain vase shows H.M.S. Donegal rescuing the crew of the captured French warship Brave after the Battle of St Domingo in 1806. The vase belonged to Admiral Sir Pulteney Malcolm (1768-1838), captain of HMS Donegal, who was born in Dumfriesshire.

On the reverse is a gilt cypher 'CPM' for Clemetina and Pulteney Malcolm. The vase is decorated throughout in underglaze polychrome enamels.

Days before the scene depicted, the Brave had been badly damaged by the Donegal during the battle of St. Domingo and is shown with its masts broken. The vase belonged to Admiral Sir Pulteney Malcolm, captain of HMS Donegal, who was born in Dumfriesshire.
