Piece of a leather purse
Add to album

This piece of a leather purse was found at the site of the early Christian monastery on the island of Iona in Argyll. It was used sometime between 550 and 750.

The piece of leather has holes at the top, for threading a thong to use for a drawstring closing.

The monastery of Iona was founded by Irish monks in the 6th century. Like Irish monasteries, different activities appear to have taken place in different areas. Excavations have revealed evidence of metalworking, leatherworking and woodworking.
