Ashadar stick
Add to album

An ashadar stick is a form of column sundial. This wooden example was made in Nepal in the 19th century.

The ashadar consists of an octagonal tapering stick with scales for each month, together with an index rod attached by a cord.

In use, the stick is held vertical and the index rod is passed through the appropriate hole in the stick to cast the shadow of the sun over the inscribed hours.
