Ballot box, used by the Edinburgh Harmonists' Society

This mahogany veneered ballot box was used by the Edinburgh Harmonists' Society.

The drawers, labelled 'YES' and 'NO', are lined with red felt and the base with green baize. The box presently contains 32 ceramic marbles which would have been used to cast votes.

The purpose of the box was to provide for a secret ballot on the admission of members or other decisions. Each voting member placed his hand in the hole at the top and released a marble into the drawer of his choice.
