Balance beam & weight pans
To ensure fair trade, burghs each kept a set of standard weights and measures against which those in commercial use could be checked. This bronze balance beam to weigh seven pounds, together with the copper weight pans, belonged to the Royal Burgh of Dunbar in East Lothian. The items were made in the 19th century by J. White & Sons of Auchtermuchty in Fife.
The beam and the pans are stamped 'J WHITE & SON / MAKERS / AUCHTERMUCHTY' and 'BURGH OF DUNBAR / STANDARD BEAM / TO / WEIGH / 7 / POUNDS'.
