This fragment of matted cattle hair textile, together with twisted woollen and plaited horsehair cords, was found at Sheshader on Lewis in the Outer Hebrides. They are unusual survivals of these perishable objects, and date between 1300 and 840 BC.

From the time of the very earliest hunters and gatherers, communities understood the properties of a wide range of fibres. The first textiles were made from plant fibres. Later the hair from animals was used as well.
