Tombstone, of Katharine Carstairs

This tombstone of Katharine Carstairs is from St Andrews in Fife. It is dated 1649.

The inscription reads 'Blessed are the dead that die in the Lord from henceforth they rest from their labours. Here laid away in hope of a blessed resurrection rest the remains of an excellent matron, Katharine Carstairs, who was twice married'.

17th-century tombstones emphasised the virtues of the deceased and displayed images of death and resurrection. They reflected not only a desire for immortality but also the growing wealth of some merchants and their families.
