This wooden model is of the steam ship 'Consolation', a cargo ship dating from 1873. SS 'Consolation' was built by James Aitken of Whiteinch, Glasgow for the firm of D R MacGregor. The model is built to a scale of 1:60.
Like many steam ships built before 1880, this ship was also rigged for sailing in case the engines failed.
In 1878, when D R MacGregor went bankrupt, 'Consolation' was taken over by George Gibson & Co Ltd of Leith. Thereafter she was engaged in general trading with the ports of Dunkirk, Rotterdam and Antwerp.
