Brooches, a nail cleaner and a glass bead
This photo shows bronze brooches from Stevenston Sands in Ayrshire and Castlelaw Fort in Midlothian, a bronze nail cleaner, from Hownam Rings, Roxburghshire, and a glass bead from Galdenoch Farm, New Luce in Wigtownshire.
The brooch from Stevenston Sands is of a type known as a plate brooch, and is unfinished. The brooch from Castlelaw Fort has enamel. The possible nail cleaner is broken at the tip. The bead is of a type known as a melon bead.
Although the Roman occupation in Scotland was strictly military, it did result in a number of fine objects being imported. These spread by various means to the population around the camps, where they were used as status symbols in the local society.
