Ceremonial axe (n'bouet), with jade blade

This ceremonial axe, called a 'n'bouet', was once a valuable possession of a wealthy and important New Caledonia islander.

A broad, thin jade axehead is attached to an elaborate handle which has a wrapping of printed calico bound with cord. Cord tassels adorn the end of the handle.

Ceremonial axes featuring precious jade blades were traditionally symbols of power, status and wealth in New Caledonia and on other Pacific islands. They would be displayed at important times and exchanged as valuable gifts.
