Bone knife
Add to album

This bone knife was found at Jarlshof in Shetland. It had probably been used for filleting and carving carcases between 950 and 400 BC.

The knife is made from a finely polished ox scapula rounded to a crescent shape.

The tools used for skinning, dismembering, filleting and carving carcasses were simple but efficient, often made from whatever natural resources were at hand. Some are not very different from tools used today.
