Bowl
Add to album

This bowl was found in a chambered cairn at Unival on North Uist in the Outer Hebrides. It had been placed inside the tomb as a grave gift, and had probably contained an offering of food or drink. It dates from between 3400 and 2900 BC.

The bowl is hemispherical with a broad, out-turned rim. It is fireware and has been burnished on the exterior. The entire outer surface is decorated, with incised lines forming a herringbone pattern on the body and three rows of impressions on the rim.
