Aeroplane propeller & engineThis aeroplane propeller and aero engine were probably used together around 1914 to power a Bleriot biplane. The propeller was made in 1913 by the Blackburn Propeller Co. of Leeds. The aero-engine was one of two made in 1911 or 1912 by Arrol-Johnston of Paisley in Renfrewshire. The two-bladed wooden propeller is stamped on the hub 'BLACKBURN PROPELLERS LEEDS, TYPE B.40 NUMBER.138.' There are faded transfers on the blades. The semi-radial, air-cooled piston engine had four cylinders in a 'fan' layout. Only 3 cylinders survive. The Arrol-Johnston engine is a rare example of an early aero-engine being one of only two examples built. The layout for this type of powerplant would have been used on a Lane monoplane which followed the layout of the Bleriot XI but with a biplane tail plane. The lane was designed in 1910 by Charles Lane of Lanes British Aeroplanes Ltd of London. Record detailsTo search on related items, click any linked text below.
