Railway ticket, for Glasgow & Garnkirk railway

This railway ticket is for the Glasgow and Garnkirk Railway, opened in 1833. The ticket dates from around 1835 and illustrates an early steam locomotive.

The ticket is stamped 'Outside' and would have been used by passengers travelling in an open, rather than an enclosed carriage.

The Glasgow and Garnkirk Railway was built originally to 'Scotch Gauge' of 4ft 6in (1.37m). It was incorporated into the Caledonian Railway Company in 1846. The Caledonian's first headquarters were at Edinburgh but by 1879 they had moved to the site of the present Central Station in Glasgow.
