Sculptured stone
Add to album

This roughly shaped sandstone pillar was found at the site of a chapel in Over-Kirkhope at Ettrick in Selkirkshire. It is evidence of the spread of Christianity between 400 and 700.

The top of one side of the stone has an incised human figure with a large head and upturned arms, clothed in a tunic with a cross on the breast. The other sides are undecorated. The top of the pillar has a shallow socket, perhaps for a cross head.

The figure on this stone is an Orans, which in Early Christian art represents the soul of the deceased, already in Paradise, praying for those left on earth.
