Add to album

This large pewter communion plate was used at Wester Greyfriars Church in Edinburgh. It dates from 1722. The plate held the pieces of bread which represented the body of Christ during the communion ceremony.

The plate has a wide plain rim sloping steeply into a deep base. The upper side of the rim is decorated with the inscription 'For the Waster Gray Friers Kirk 1722'.

In Presbyterian churches communion usually took place once or twice a year. Those considered worthy by the elders were invited to sit round a table to share bread and wine, representing the body and blood of Christ.
