This pewter measure for a Scots gill dates from the first half of the 19th century. It is a Glasgow-type of measure, pear-shaped, with a domed lid. It has an 1869 excise mark and is inscribed 'Two glass' (equivalent to 1 gill Scots) on top of the lid. It has no maker's mark.

Pewter was commonly used for measures and drinking vessels as it was both fairly cheap and strong enough to stand up to to the rigours of tavern life.
