Add to album

This pewter measure dates from around 1750. Originally for a Scots gill, it was converted to an Imperial measure, probably around 1830.

The baluster measure has a handle and a ball thumb-piece. On the bottom, it is stamped '3/4 IMP GILL CO FOR', the excise marks for the County of Forfar.

Pewter was commonly used for measures and drinking vessels as it was both fairly cheap and strong enough to stand up to to the rigours of tavern life.
