Plate, commemorating Glasgow International Exhibition, 1901
Add to album

This earthenware plate was made by the Glasgow potters J. and M.P. Bell around 1901. It commemorates the Glasgow International Exhibition of that year.

The plate is transfer printed with a view of the Glasgow Exhibition buildings. The exterior of the 1901 exhibition was designed in the style of an Eastern palace by the architect James Miller.

Glasgow hosted international exhibitions in 1888 and 1901. People flocked to the exhibitions from all over the country, bringing revenue to local hotels and businesses. Scottish produce from railway engineering to pottery vied with international exhibits.
