Dish

This maiolica dish was made in the 1560s in Italy, possibly at the workshop of Domenago da Venezia in Venice or in Urbino.

The dish is decorated in colours with a warrior and two maidens beside a statue, with a castle and sea behind. The underside is inscribed 'lidolo' [perhaps for 'the idol'].

The dish may relate thematically to a series on the subject of love sometimes inscribed and described as 'the Triumph of Venus'.
