This transfer-printed earthenware tureen was made by Robert Cochran & Company, at the Britannia Pottery in Glasgow. It dates from the second half of the 19th century.

The pattern is called 'SYRIA'. The centre on the side of the tureen shows four figures by the edge of a lake with buildings and mountains in the background.

This is a popular pattern which was also produced from around 1840 by R.A. Kidston & Company of the Verreville Pottery in Glasgow.
