Plate, made at Alloa, Clackmannanshire

This plate was made in the late 19th century at W. & J.A. Bailey's pottery at Alloa in Clackmannanshire.

The plate is moulded with 'majolica' style decoration.

Alloa was an important coal mining centre, and a pottery (and eventually a glassworks) were established by the 1790s to take advantage of the abundant fuel and locally available clay. The pottery at Alloa finally closed in 1907.
