Harness mounts
Add to album

These three lead harness mounts were found in the area of the Royal Nurseries to the north east of Craigmillar Castle in Edinburgh. They date from the 19th century and were possibly originally covered in brass.

The mount on the left is inscribed 'CHALMERS. EDIN' which may possibly be George Chalmers, a saddler in Clerk Street in the mid 19th century. The mount on the left is inscribed, 'WILSON DALKEITH'. The inscription, '...HALMERS...' can be deciphered on the centre mount.

Although harnesses are rarely found, the mounts, fasteners, studs, and strap junctions often survive. They must have been common items wherever horses were used in transport.
