Relief

This vertical border relief of grey schist carved with scenes of the Buddha comes from Gandhara in modern Pakistan. It dates to the 2nd or 3rd century.

The vertical border relief is carved with four scenes of the Buddha among monks and disciples, between narrow vertical borders of seated Buddhas and paired figure motifs.

Early Buddhist religious buildings were decorated with elaborately carved panels, friezes and borders, recounting episodes from the life of the Buddha and highlighting his teaching activities.
