Add to album

This ceramic pot was found in a grave near Lochinch in Wigtownshire. It was placed within a grave, probably containing an offering of food or drink, sometime between 2200 and 1650 BC.

The pot is decorated all over on its exterior with parallel lines of impressed ornament and triangular indentations.

From around 2500 BC, individual burial, usually in a cist, a rectangular stone box-shaped grave, became popular over much of Scotland. In most cases, the only item to be buried with the dead was a pot containing an offering of food or drink.
