Mould

This stone mould was found at Ferintosh in Ross-shire. It was used to cast flat bronze axeheads sometime between 2300 and 1750 BC.

This side of the mould has two matrices for casting flat axeheads of different size and shape.

Around a dozen stone moulds dating to this period for making bronze objects, especially flat axes, have been found in Scotland, with a concentration in the north east. They indicate an area of bronze working, especially for a common form of flat axe.
