Fashion plate, from The Englishwoman's Domestic MagazineThis hand-coloured fashion plate is from a scrap album containing a selection of 19th century plates. The plate is from The Englishwoman's Domestic Magazine, a ladies' magazine published in London. Dated January, 1862, it illustrates two evening dresses with headdresses. The dress skirts are enormous, supported by the artificial crinoline or hooped cage which had been introduced early in 1856. The plate is signed, 'A. Bodin' and 'Jules David'. Bodin was a French engraver who created plates for French magazines in the period 1843-70. From 1860 to 1877, The Englishwoman's Domestic Magazine included a monthly fashion plate drawn by Jules David. Originally produced for the magazine, Le Moniteur de la Mode, his plates were also issued in many other European magazines. Record detailsTo search on related items, click any linked text below.
