Butter dish

This transfer-printed earthenware butter dish with cover was made in Glasgow by the pottery firm of David Lockhart & Sons. It dates from the 1860s or 1870s and is marked, 'Abbotsford' and 'DL & S'.

The pattern shows a young girl holding a doll on top of a goat's back.

From about 1750 until the 1930s Scotland's potteries were producing utilitarian and decorative wares for home and foreign markets. David Lockhart & Sons ran the Victoria Pottery in Pollokshaws, Glasgow from between around 1866 and 1876.
