This cream glazed earthenware bowl was probably made by Rathbone's Pottery at Portobello in Midlothian. It dates from around 1815 and is inscribed, 'Waterloo 42' which refers to the 42nd Highland Regiment which fought at the battle of Waterloo in that year.

Underneath the inscription is a painted Highland military bonnet with red and black hackle or plume.

Good supplies of coal and clay and easy transport by sea meant that the south side of the Firth of Forth was an ideal location for potteries to develop. Small-scale works existed there from the 17th century and larger factories developed from around 1750.
