Salt & pepper casters
Add to album

This set of silver salt and pepper casters was made by around 1860 by Hamilton and Co of Calcutta. It is one of the most important surviving sets of colonial Indian casters.

Two of the casters are marked 'S' for salt, one marked 'P' for pepper and one marked 'K' for kayan (today's cayenne pepper).

Colonial Indian casters of such distinctive design are virtually unknown. The workmanship is clearly provincial, lacking the finesse and consistency of sophisticated smiths.
