Uniform, of Royal Company of Archers

This tartan uniform is of the Royal Company of Archers, a society originally formed to promote the sport of archery in Edinburgh. Dating from the first half of the 18th century, the uniform was probably owned by Stuart Threipland of Fingask.

Tartan coat from a Royal Company of Archers uniform, mid 18th century

The company was revitalised in 1713 and a new, all-tartan, uniform was created for its members. Tartan was fashionable at the time as an expression of anti-Union and pro-Jacobite sentiment and many of the Company were known Jacobites.
