Add to album

This painted panel is of the Cape Club of Edinburgh. The club was established in 1764, initially to raise support for a Scottish militia. It became a celebrated convivial club and by 1800 had over 600 'Knights of the Cape'.

The insignia on the panel includes the text, 'The Knights Companions of the Cape'.

Clubs of all kinds were a prominent part of the Scottish social scene in the 18th and 19th centuries. Membership varied depending on whether they were set up for political, debating, literary or simply convivial purposes. Many met at favoured taverns.
