Saucer with a portrait of Robert Burns

This ceramic saucer with a portrait of Robert Burns dates from the late 19th century. Burns's poetry was enormously popular and his image, as the 'National Bard', was produced on many types of everyday items.

The saucer's transfer-printed design features Burns' portrait set amongst thistles and roses. There is a purple band on the saucer's rim and a finer one inside and below it.
