Glazed earthenware container in the form of a toad

This glazed earthenware container in the form of a toad was made by Peter Gardner's Dunmore Pottery in Falkirk district. It is based on a Chinese original.

Turquoise glazed earthenware vase standing on three legs, with the body in the shape of a toad, Dunmore, Falkirk, Stirlingshire, between 1860 and 1910

Peter Gardner took over his father's small redware pottery in 1860 and immediately began to develop new ranges of fashionable wares. The pottery was supported by the local landowners the Earl and Countess of Dunmore.
