Portrait of Robert Grant of LurgRobert Grant of Lurg, painted in 1769 when he was 97 years old. Grant served in one of the Independent Companies raised to patrol the highlands in 1725. In 1739, aged 67, he helped to bring in recruits for the first highland regiment to serve in the British Army. Grant was described as being of a 'stern, determined and irascible character'. Two years before this portrait was painted he fought a duel with a much younger man. To allow for Grant's age and declining strength, pistols were used instead of swords. This is thought to be the reason why he carries a pistol in this portrait. Record detailsTo search on related items, click any linked text below.
