Wooden ladle for church collections

This wooden collecting ladle comes from Lowland Scotland. It is thought to date from the early 19th century. The ladle would have been held by an elder and extended along the pews to gather collections at Sunday services in a Presbyterian Church.

Wooden collecting ladle

A painting by John Phillip (1817-67) called 'Collecting the Offering in a Scotch Kirk' shows a collecting ladle being used. The painting was first exhibited in London in 1855, where audiences were unfamiliar with the concept of collecting ladles.
