Beggar's badge
Add to album

This beggar's badge is from the parish of Cavers in Roxburghshire. It is made of lead and dates from 1729.

The front of the heart-shaped badge bears the words 'Cavers, Roxb' and the date, 1729. There are two perforations at the top.

The heart is the emblem of the Douglases, a powerful clan which in medieval times dominated much of southern Scotland. The shape of the badge is probably a reference to the clan.
