Baton, of special constable

This painted wooden baton was one of a number for use by special constables during riots in Dunfermline in Fife in 1840.

The baton is painted with the number of the special constable to whom it was issued.

Special constables were ordinary citizens who enrolled as policemen and were used at times of special need, such as industrial unrest or whenever large crowds were expected.
