Sculptured stoneThis building stone was found at the site of the Roman fort at Birrens in Dumfriesshire. It was used sometime between 120 and 180 AD. The stone has been decorated with a phallus, incised along the length of the stone with a punch or similar instrument. The Romans were superstitious, and used amulets and pictures of the gods to ward off evil. Phallic representations are found on a large number of Roman objects.
