Collection box and medals, associated with Scottish Women's Hospitals units and Dr Elsie Inglis

This cardboard collection box was used during the First World War to raise money for the Scottish Women's Hospitals units. The units were formed by Dr Elsie Inglis, a 'Votes for Women' campaigner from Edinburgh, and served in France, Serbia and Salonika.

The initials of the National Union of Women's Suffrage Societies appear on the box, showing one connection between women's war work and women's politics. The medals belonged to Dr Isobel Emslie who commanded the Scottish Women's Hospital at Vranja in Serbia. They include British, Serbian, Russian and French awards.

Dr Emslie directed the Indian Red Cross Medical Service during World War II and was awarded the badge of a Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1948.
