Perforated cobble

This perforated triangular cobble was found at Gallowhill at Turriff in Aberdeenshire. It could have been used as a weight or a wedge. Its date is unknown.

This has been made from a small, roughly triangular cobble. It has an hourglass-shaped perforation, drilled mostly from one side, and positioned off-centre.

Perforated cobbles of various shapes and sizes have been used for various purposes: fishing weights, roof weights, loom weights, etc. This particular one has a shape which would also allow it to be used as a heavy-duty wedge.
